Hi, due to lac of space in my 67 nova I´m planing on move out the oilfilter from the block to the inner fender..
I´ve heard from several person´s about this but some say I´m gona lose my bearings doing this???
Got an no-nova 350 engine block and hooker chassie headers.. ther orginal front pan and pump.
so ther´s hardly room for a small filter..
The pump is going to be "blueprinted" and an washer is to be installed behind the spring.
the "By pass" in the spinn on filter holder is to bee blocked
½" steel plumming is to be used exept betwine block and chassie... and my choise of 1 or 2 filter holder..
Oil to bee used is Q-state 10-40 or 5-50 mineral
The engine is going to be a 65K rpm 400+ hp engine
Q Is my plan wrong?
Is the pump just going to cavitate?
Is the oilflow/pressure to be to low??
If its going to faile, why?
Happy for all input, still in building mode so easy to change, wont risk lose my engine.
Thanks Anders.

I've personally never done this, but I don't see WHY this would hurt anything. At the very LEAST you're gonna be increasing the oil capacity (albeit slightly), which is a good thing.

Just curious, which pump, and what clearances are you setting up on your engine? Adding pressure and/or volume just eats power, and if it's not needed, then you're just wasting power. If you're not really opening up the clearances, then the stock pump with the regular spring MAY work fine.
the "By pass" in the spinn on filter holder is to bee blocked
I've heard of folks doing this, but I've read you gotta be CAREFUL, because if you spin the motor up very much at all when it's cold you could blow your filter off, or a line, or...?

Granted, I'm no "Grumpy Jenkins" when it comes to engines, but I've done a LOT of talking to the Stock/SuperStock & NMCA boys as of late on different oiling issues, and you'd be VERY surprised at what the majority of them run on their cars. To my surprise, the majority run STOCK volume oil pumps (with AT MOST a heavier spring, but not all do that), some run small block pumps, and a lot even run with as little as 2-3 quarts of oil! Granted, they aren't street cars, but if their BBC's can repeatedly live past 8,000 rpms, then they must know a little something. These boys are literally chasing .001's of seconds, and do extensive testing, but their theory is "every little bit helps". Anyway, they feel the majority of oiling problems are attributed to cavitation, versus the traditional thoughts of too little oil capacity or too little volume or pressure.

Yeah but he is gonna run at 65K RPM's
My Pro Touring 600 plus hp cars have remote filters and work fine. My 67 Shelby GT 500 has a remote filter that Shelby installed when new and it ran a 500 mile tire test in 67 at a average speed of 142 mph so I don't see a Problem.

Hey guys, thanks for your input.
Chevy454: I´ve used the By pass blocking in previus engines and as you pointed out You´ve have to bee verry careful whit engine speed untill you reatch right temp on engine, as for clearances I´ve go as close to Chevy specs as posibly if bearingmanufactory not say othervice..
The "blueprinting" of stock Nova67 pump (front sump short pump whit looong pickuptub )is to check all clearances and if out of order correct it..if needed lithle deburring and polishingof entry to mainbearingcap.
Charley Lillard: you got mee there 65K ha ha should bee 6,5K. Nice to hear you gone remout whit no trubble in several cars,, I´ll asked to get more input and to bee more "safe than sorry"
Thanks again.

If your gonna be running the factory clearances, then running the stiff spring will probably be overkill. Remember, volume/pressure eat horsepower.

I install alot of these on "ALL" size engines. v6 to 502 BB.
Mercruiser makes them and sells them for all thier engines except the inline 4 cy. {3.L} the inline is easy. But I have had some real tuff filters on the v8 and v6s.....
If you have a good system a remote filter should not cause a problem at all.

I think NASCAR uses them."remote filters"

I have the same problem you have: I can't fit a filter between the Hookers and the block(non-Nova) in my 66, so I went remote. My oil pressure is 40# at idle, hot, using 10W30, so I don't think I have oil pressure problems. I think using steel line is a good idea, although I'm running hose (special high temp, etc.)right now with no problems. Whatever setup you go with, just make sure you have a good oil pressure gauge.
Good luck!
